Cottage reads

I spent two weeks at a cottage in Muskoka this summer.  It's just outside Mactier, a small blue collar community south of Parry Sound.  It doesn't have the touristy caché of other Muskoka towns, but between the Foodland, the Home Hardware and the LCBO, does have all the discerning cottager needs.  Including an interesting assortment of magazines at the hardware store.

Within the 50 odd titles on the rack by the checkout, there was an intriguing combination  that would  appeal to both locals and cottagers - the front row included:

  • Biblical Archaeology
  • People
  • Cottage Life
  • Smithsonian
  • National Geographic
  • Canadian Geographic
  • Survival and Preparedness

The rest appeared to be an assortment of sports, beauty and knitting publications.  I looked at the browsing customers and guessed who would buy which...

(BTW I declined to buy any myself, as I had brought my own backlog of periodicals from home -  National Geographic, the Walrus and Virages.)
